The United Nations Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent is an annual, fully funded opportunity designed to empower individuals of African descent from the diaspora who are actively involved in promoting human rights and combating racism. This intensive training takes place at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland


🌍 Fellowship Overview

  • Duration: Approximately 3 weeks, including preparatory online sessions.

  • Location: Geneva, Switzerland.

  • Coverage: Return airfare, basic health insurance, and a stipend for accommodation and living expenses.

  • Languages: English, French, and Spanish.

🎯 Objectives

The programme aims to:

  • Enhance understanding of international human rights law and the UN human rights system.

  • Deepen knowledge of frameworks addressing racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance, with a focus on people of African descent.

  • Develop skills in project proposal writing, public speaking, and engaging with human rights mechanisms.

  • Provide firsthand exposure to human rights mechanisms and facilitate networking with a diverse range of actors.

  • Be individuals of African descent residing in the diaspora.

  • Have a minimum of 4 years of work experience related to the rights of people of African descent.

  • Submit a letter from an organization working on issues related to people of African descent or minority rights certifying their status.

  • Be available to attend the full duration of the programme and actively participate in all activities.
